Edmonton Mother Claims Her $1M Win After Six Months

Publish: 06.03.2017

In a rather unusual scenario, a mother from Edmonton has decided to wait for six months before collecting her $1 million prize from Lotto 6/49.

An Unusual Scenario

While most  winners – those who are aware of the win of course – would rush to claim their prize and pick up the money as soon as possible, Ida Mataya opted to maintain her low profile until she made concrete plans on what to do with the money.

Ida Mataya won her $1 million prize in the Lotto 6/49 which was drawn on 24 August 2016, and although she checked and confirmed her winning ticket a day after, together with her sons she decided to discuss the options first.

“I was really happy, but I didn’t want to draw too much attention to myself because I didn’t know what I was going to do with it.”

“I wanted to take some time to make plans.”, Mataya said in a statement.

What Ida Mataya decided to do is to buy herself a new home. Additionally, she plans to take a trip with her sons and help out her nieces with their education.

Three New Winners

In the meantime, the Saturday night’s Lotto 6/49 draw yielded three winning tickets for the total jackpot worth $7 million. The winning tickets were purchased in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec with each one of them worth just a little over $2.3 million.

The draw’s guaranteed $1 million prize ticked was sold in the Prairies.

Next Lotto 6/49 draw scheduled for 8 March will be worth approximately $5 million.

Contrastingly to Lotto 6/49, there were no winners for the Friday night’s Lotto Max Draw jackpot worth $17 million. The following draw will see the jackpot prize rise to nearly $26 million.
